Gerard John Corcoran was born Jan. 12, 1920 in New York. His father, John Corcoran, was a helper in a steamfitting business and his mother, Katherine Fetcsher Corcoran, a homemaker.
The boy attended St. Bartholomew Catholic school in Elmhurst, a neighborhood in Queens.
He enlisted in the Navy on Jan. 23, 1940, and was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
A Mass in his memory was said at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Jackson Heights in February 1942.
His brother, James, about three years younger, also served in the Navy during the war.
