FC3c George Everett Fones
George Everett Fones enlisted in the Navy on July 11, 1938. He wrote “I like the Navy” on his application as the reason he wanted to join.
He was a fire controlman and petty officer third class when he was killed on the U.S.S. Arizona in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
He was born Nov. 25, 1920 in Virginia to Arthur Fones, a driver for a bakery, and Maida Fones, a homemaker. She was granted a divorce in 1931 on grounds of desertion.
In his last letter to his mother, George said he planned to celebrate his 21st birthday at a dance.
He had just extended his enlistment by two years and “loved the Navy,” his mother said.
His brother, George, served in the Army during the war.
