S2c George Parten Fowler,

S2c George Parten Fowler

George Parten Fowler was born Sept. 11, 1922 in Mart, Texas about 90 miles south of Dallas and about 18 miles east of Waco. Mart was where his father was born, and his mother was born just a few miles away.

Mr. Fowler lived his whole life in Mart, population 2,856 in 1940, until he joined the Navy. He wanted to enlist but had to get his parents’ permission because he was 17.

He was a seaman second class when he was killed on the U.S.S. Arizona in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

His father, Hansel, was a barber and his mother, Lucille, was a homemaker. By the time of the Census in early 1940 she was working in sales and George, still a high school student, was working part time in sales at a dry goods store.

He had been an Eagle Scout and played football for the Mart High School football team for two years. A memorial service was held at the Baptist church after his death. On the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, another memorial service was held at the church.
