David Darling Hanna was nine in the spring of 1930 when his father, Robert, died in the central Texas town of Groesbeck, population 2,059.

Born Oct. 13, 1920, David was the only child of Robert Hanna and Stella Crockett Hanna, who was a homemaker when her husband died. She later worked as a saleslady at a retail ready-to-wear store.

The son, nicknamed “Buster,” graduated from Groesbeck High in 1938. The yearbook said he played football and basketball, performed with the glee and drama clubs, and belonged to the Spanish club and Future Farmers of America. His father had been a farmer.

Mr. Hanna joined the Navy on April 5, 1940, and was an electrician’s mate and petty officer third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

There is a cenotaph in his memory at Faulkenberry Cemetery in Groesbeck. His parents are buried there.
