F1c Clyde Franklin Huffman
Clyde Franklin Huffman, born Sept. 4, 1918, was the eldest of six children of Ella Lindsey Huffman, a homemaker, and Lorn Huffman, a tool dresser for oil wells.
The son graduated in 1936 from South Bloomingville High School in Benton Township in south-central Ohio. At the time of the 1940 Census, conducted that April, he was living with his family in Benton — population 648 — and working as a truck driver. He earned $1,600 for 30 weeks of work in 1939, a handsome sum for a young man during the Depression. It’s equal to about $29,500 in 2020 dollars.
Mr. Huffman enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 2, 1940, and was a fireman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
A cenotaph in his memory is at Pine Grove Cemetery in South Bloomingville.
His two brothers served in World War II — Clarence in the Navy and Daniel in the Army.
