S1c Lewis Burton Jr. Hughes

Lewis Burton Hughes Jr. was born Aug. 6, 1920 in Northport, Alabama across the Black Warrior River from Tuscaloosa.

His father was a fireman and his mother, Alabama Hinton Hughes, a homemaker. He was the oldest of their seven children.

Young Lewis attended Tuscaloosa High School for at least a year and was on the football team. The 1940 Census said he was a truck driver for a grocery store and earned $283 for 32 weeks of work the previous year. That’s equal to about $5,200 in 2020.

Mr. Hughes enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 5, 1940. He was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

His brother James served in the Marines in World War II and his brother Herman in the Army in the Korean War.
