S1c Irland Jr. Shores

Irland Shores Jr. was born Aug. 26, 1922 in northeast Alabama. His father worked at a sawmill and his mother, Lydia Myers Shores, was a homemaker.

Young Mr. Shores left the community of Georgia Mountain, population 637, in October 1940 to enlist in the Navy. He was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. His body was found Dec. 9 and he is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at the Punchbowl in Honolulu.

A brother, Gance, served in the Navy during World War II and in Korea and Vietnam. A sister, Maxine, served in the Army from June 1944 through August 1947.
