FC3c Harold William Stockman
Harold William Stockman was born June 5, 1921 in Ferry County, Washington northwest of Spokane, though his family soon moved about 140 miles east to Kootenai, Idaho. His mother, Gertrude Robinson Stockman, was a homemaker and his father, Frederick William Stockman, owned a gas station and garage. The family included a younger sister.
Harold was 12 when his mother died of multiple sclerosis.
Brief mentions in local newspapers in the 1930s said he was a Boy Scout and finished the 8th grade at the Kootenai school. The spring 1940 Census said he had completed high school — probably at nearby Sandpoint — and was a new worker.
He left Kootenai, population 214, to enlist in the Navy on May 20, 1940. Mr. Stockman was a fire controlman and petty officer third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
