S1c Douglas Carlton Moore

In November 1939, Douglas Carlton Moore and his uncle, James Carlton Moore, both enlisted in the United States Navy. Born on October 6, 1921, in Anderson, South Carolina, Douglas grew up in a family of hard-working individuals, with his father and stepmother both working in the weave shop of a local cotton mill. Despite his young age, Douglas had a reputation for being a talented pool shooter, but his sense of duty and patriotism led him to join the Navy before graduating high school.

Douglas was assigned to the USS Arizona as a seaman first class, while his uncle James served as a shipfitter and petty officer third class. However, their promising careers were cut short on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona was hit by multiple bombs, and both Douglas and James lost their lives that day.

The news of their tragic deaths sent shockwaves through their family and the community in which they lived. Douglas had become engaged to a woman in Hawaii and had sent her photo back to his family in Anderson, but they never had the chance to meet her. Despite the passage of time, the memory of Douglas and James Carlton Moore lives on. Their sacrifice will always be honored and respected, and their legacy will inspire us to remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country.

Although Douglas’s remains were never recovered, he will always be remembered for his courage and dedication. His decision to serve his country was a testament to his character, and his sacrifice will forever be etched in our hearts. We will always be grateful for the sacrifice that Douglas and James made on that fateful day, and we will never forget their bravery and patriotism.
