Dale Dean Bicknell was born Nov. 12, 1921, at Rochester, Washington, a community of less than 1,000 south of Olympia. His father, Bert Bicknell, was a farmer and his mother, Mabel Mills Bicknell, a homemaker. She died when the boy was 10.
He was one of 36 graduates of Rochester High in 1939. Mr. Bicknell was class treasurer.
He enlisted in the Navy on May 15, 1940, and was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
The final Arizona muster roll spells his middle name as Deen, but a cenotaph at Mountain View Cemetery in Centralia, Washington — shared with his mother — spells his middle name as Dean.
His brother Burl worked for the Navy at its Puget Sound yard from 1940 until 1944.
