Francis Lloyd Carey was born Aug. 5, 1919 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His father, also named Francis, died the next June of influenza, just before completing 21 months of Navy service, including time on the world’s first double-hulled submarine, the M-1. He was a machinist’s mate and petty officer first class.
His mother, Geraldine Straub Carey, died in November 1922, leaving the boy an orphan at age three.
By the time of the 1930 Census, Francis was living in Roosevelt, New York on Long Island east of Queens with his paternal grandparents and five of their children, ages 15 to 25. He attended nearby Hempstead High School.
Mr. Carey enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 5, 1939. He was a storekeeper and petty officer third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Another Hempstead High student was killed on the Arizona. Oran Merrill Brabbzson graduated in 1939 or 1940 and enlisted in September 1940. He was a musician and petty officer second class when he died.
