F1c Benjamin Franklin Shively
Benjamin Franklin Shively was born on Christmas Day 1919, the son of Harry Shively, an engineer at a paper mill, and Agnes Albrecht Shively, a homemaker.
Ben, as he was known, attended school in Three Rivers, Michigan 25 miles south of Kalamazoo. The April 1940 Census said he was a laborer at a paper mill. He had worked 30 weeks in 1939 and earned $300 – the equivalent of about $6,400 in 2022 dollars. He enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 8, 1940.
Mr. Shively was a fireman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
VFW Post 3019 in Three Rivers is named in his memory.
