S2c Charles Harold Springer

Charles Harold Springer was born New Year’s Day 1922 in Richmond, California north of Berkeley to Earl L. Springer, a boilermaker and later a driver at an oil refinery, and Mabel Coburn Springer, a homemaker.

In 1939 the father worked 50 weeks and earned $1,608 – equivalent to about $31,000 in 2022 dollars

The son attended Richmond schools, then enlisted in the Navy on June 26, 1941. He had been aboard the U.S.S. Arizona a little more than three months when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Mr. Springer was a seaman second class.

His half-brother, Harold, also served during World War II.
