PFC Donald Eugene Fleetwood
Donald Eugene Fleetwood was born Nov. 14, 1921 in Wahkonsa Township, Webster County, Iowa north-northwest of Des Moines. His mother, Elizabeth Bort Fleetwood, was a homemaker and his father, Claude Fleetwood, operated a machine and supply business.
The son attended Fort Dodge High School as a member of the class of 1939.
He enlisted in the Marines on Sept. 9, 1940, and soon went aboard the U.S.S. Arizona. He was a private first class when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
Mr. Fleetwood was a member of the Arizona’s whale boat team, which was runner-up in the Pacific fleet championships in the fall of 1941.
His father served in the Army from July 1918 through February 1919.
