F3c Donald Vern Westin
Donald Vern Westin was born April 13, 1922 in Portland, Oregon. His mother, Asta Lundin Westin, was a homemaker and his father, Gust Westin, a blacksmith and later a commercial fisherman. They were Swedish immigrants.
Donald attended Edison High School before he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era federal jobs program for young men, in 1939.
He enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 5, 1940. Mr. Westin was a fireman third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
His father served in the Army from July 1917 through June 1919.
