Everett Ray Belt Jr. was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 3, 1917 to Everett Belt, a railroad accountant, and Margaret Puckett Belt, a homemaker.
The family soon moved to Missouri. Young Everett attended elementary school and 8th grade in Webster Groves. He graduated from nearby Kirkwood High School. The 1940 Census, conducted in the spring, identified him as a salesman at a building store.
He enlisted in the Marines that August and was a private first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
At least two brothers also served in World War II — William in the Navy and Donald in the Marines.
