F1c Floyd Bates Haffner

Floyd Bates Haffner never lived far from his home in Browning in west-central Illinois, population 402, until he enlisted in the Navy on Jan. 17, 1939.

He was a fireman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

Mr. Haffner was born in Browning on June 22, 1915, the son of Charles Haffner, a farmer, and Ida Bates Haffner, a homemaker.

A memorial service honored him on Dec. 28, 1941 at the Methodist church in Browning.
