EM3c Francis Arnold Jr. Ellis
Francis Arnold Ellis Jr. was born in Chicago on March 11, 1920, while his father was working there for the Canadian National Railroad.
His parents, Francis Arnold Ellis, and Isabelle Smith Ellis, had their permanent home in Winnipeg, Canada. The family were Methodists.
The son attended school in Winnipeg, including Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute from 1935 to 1937. He worked for a year as a messenger for the Canadian Wheat Board, then enlisted in the United States Navy on Sept. 19, 1939 in Minnesota. He started as an apprentice seaman earning $21 a month.
He was an electrician’s mate third class when he was killed on the U.S.S. Arizona in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
His name is inscribed on the city of Edina’s veterans memorial.
A brother, Charles Ellis, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
