S2c George Allan Jr. Bertie

George Allan Bertie Jr. was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Aug. 4, 1923. His father did electrical work and his mother, May Baxter Bertie, was a homemaker. 

In 1930 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. The parents divorced between 1938 and 1940. George junior remained with his father. 

When he applied to enlist in the Navy in the spring of 1941 he said he’d completed 11th grade. He enlisted on May 29, 1941, and was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed that Dec. 7 in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
