S2c George Allan Jr. Bertie

George Allan Bertie Jr. was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Aug. 4, 1923. His father did electrical work and his mother, George Baxter Bertie, was a homemaker. 

In 1930 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. The parents divorced by 1940 and George junior remained with his father. The spring 1940 Census said he’d completed one year of high school and was still enrolled.

He enlisted in the Navy on June 2, 1941. Mr. Bertie was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed that Dec. 7 in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
