S1c George Washington Williams
George Washington Williams was born Feb. 16, 1922 in Shenandoah County in northern Virginia. His mother, Lillian Plum Williams, was a homemaker and his father, Charles B. Williams, a farmer. They had six children.
Young Mr. Williams enlisted in the Navy on March 18, 1940. The Census conducted the next month said he lived at the Naval base at Norfolk, Virginia. He had completed one year of high school, and worked at an unidentified job for 50 weeks in 1939, earning $500 – the equivalent of about $9,600 in 2022 dollars.
Mr. Williams was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
At least one of his brothers, Samuel, also served in the Navy during World War II.
