The family lived in Red Lodge about 20 miles to the southwest for several years, then in 1925 moved 160 miles west to Butte. Harold attended Butte High School, where he was a competitive swimmer. He quit in his senior year to enlist in the Navy on May 18, 1936.
Mr. Scilley was a shipfitter and petty officer second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
His only sibling, a younger brother named James, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
