Kenneth William Hargraves was born March 27, 1922 in Missoula, Montana. His mother, Minnie Reynolds Hargraves, was a homemaker and his father, John Hargraves, a construction foreman.
Within two years the family moved to Yakima in central Washington.
The 1940 Census said that Kenneth, the youngest of 10 children, had completed 8th grade but was no longer enrolled. He was a farm laborer and his father a farmer at Wapato, a town of about 1,500 near Yakima.
The son enlisted in the Navy on June 19, 1941, and was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed less than six months later in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
