S2c Leroy Manning
Leroy Manning was born Aug. 21, 1923 in Harlan County in far southeast Kentucky. His mother, Lucy Smith Manning, was a homemaker and his father, Roy Manning, a coal miner. They had five children.
By the time of the spring 1940 Census Leroy had completed two years of high school but was no longer enrolled. He enlisted in the Navy the day before Thanksgiving that fall.
Mr. Manning was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
