S2c Leroy Manning
Leroy Manning was born Aug. 21, 1923 at Lynch in far southeast Kentucky. His mother, Lucy Smith Manning, was a homemaker and his father, Roy Manning, a coal miner. They had five children.
Leroy attended the local high school through 10th grade in the fall of 1940. He enlisted in the Navy the day before Thanksgiving.
Mr. Manning was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
Both of his brothers served in World War II — Arnold in the Army and Rex in the Navy.
