F3c Lowell D. Holmes

Lowell D. Holmes was born Aug. 27, 1920 in Alabama to Harvey Holmes, then a farmer, and Eunice Pennington Holmes, a homemaker.

By 1930 the family had moved to Attala County in central Mississippi, where the father labored at a saw mill. By April 1935 they were 40 miles west in Tchula,  then back in Alabama — at Rock Castle — by early 1940. The Census identified the father as a timber cutter.

Lowell Holmes attended Brookwood High School near Tuscaloosa and also, for one year,  Hamilton High School about 70 miles north-northwest.

He enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 23, 1940, and was a fireman third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
