S1c Mancel Curtis Lane

Mancel Curtis Lane was born Oct. 26, 1921 in Newton, Kansas 25 miles north of Wichita. His mother, Maude Leonard Lane, was a homemaker and his father, Roscoe Lane, a farmer.

By early 1930 the family had moved about 80 miles south to Newkirk, Oklahoma a few miles south of the Kansas border.

The spring 1940 Census said that Curtis, as he was known, had completed one year of high school in Newkirk.

He enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 9, 1940 and was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
