FC3c Harold William Stockman
Harold William Stockman was born June 5, 1921 at Curlew, Washington, though his family soon moved about 140 miles east to Kootenai, Idaho. His mother, Gertrude Robinson Stockman, was a homemaker and his father, Frederick William Stockman, owned a gas station and garage. The family included a younger sister.
Harold was 12 when his mother died of multiple sclerosis.
Brief mentions in local newspapers in the 1930s said he was a Boy Scout and finished the 8th grade at the Kootenai school. He graduated in 1939 from nearby Sandpoint High School.
He helped at his dad’s business and also worked as a truck driver for his uncle, Alex Stockman.
He left Kootenai, population 214, to enlist in the Navy on May 20, 1940. Mr. Stockman was a fire controlman and petty officer third class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
