S1c Harry Lee Gould
Harry Lee Gould was born Sept. 28, 1918 at Springfield, Illinois. His mother, Katherine McCullister Gould, was a homemaker and his father, Harry A. Gould, a coal miner.
An only child, the son graduated from Springfield High School in 1936. He then attended Brown’s Business College, but records conflict about whether he graduated.
The 1940 Census said he had completed a year of college but was no longer enrolled. The Census and his military draft card identified him as a secretary for the Central & Illinois Midland Railroad, a small line that mostly moved coal from the southern part of the state to power plants in the Chicago area. Before that he worked for the Illinois National Bank.
Mr. Gould enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 16, 1940. He was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
