BM2c Walter Lewis Hampton
Walter Lewis Hampton left behind four children when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Hampton was a boatswain’s mate and petty officer second class on the U.S.S. Arizona.
He was born Jan. 2, 1906 in Barnesville, a town of about 1,300 in western Minnesota. His father, Pearley Hampton, was a laborer and his mother, Mary Bredemeier Hampton, a homemaker.
The son attended school in Barnesville and then enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 18, 1925. He married Jane Campbell Hampton in Philadelphia in 1928. The couple’s first child was born the next year and they had three sons and a daughter — William, Walter, Robert, and Mary Jane. Mrs. Hampton eventually filed for divorce on grounds of abandonment.
