S2c William Howard Brown
William Howard “Buzz” Brown was born in Devitt, Oregon, on Feb. 7, 1923. His mother, Evelyn Brazzeal Brown, was a homemaker and his father, William Franklin Brown, a locomotive engineer.
By the time of the spring 1940 Census the family, which included a daughter who was about three years older, lived in Newport, Oregon. The son graduated from the local high school. He also worked for about four years as a truck driver at a logging business at Reedsport.
He enlisted in the Naval Reserve on June 24, 1941, and was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
