William Howard “Buzz” Brown was born in Cascades country in Devitt, Oregon north of California on Feb. 7, 1923. His mother, Evelyn Brazzeal Brown, was a homemaker and his father, William Franklin Brown, a locomotive engineer.
By the time of the spring 1940 Census the family, which included a daughter who was about three years older, lived in Newport, Oregon. The son had completed high school.
He enlisted in the Naval Reserve on June 24, 1941, and was a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
