S1c William Jr. Knubel
William Knubel Jr. came to the United States from Switzerland when he was two.
His parents, Martha and Wilhelm, owned a Swiss Alpen cheese factory in Knobtown southeast of Kansas City, Missouri.
The son, born April 22, 1919, enlisted in the Navy in November 1940. In his application he said he’d completed 8th grade.
He was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
He was survived by his parents and three sisters.
